Wireless Motion Detector

This section is in regards to the Honeywell 5800PIR-RES motion detector. A commonly used wireless motion detector.

When the Honeywell 5800PIR-RES wireless motion sensor is first removed from the box and powered up the red LED will flash for the first several minutes. After that the LED will never flash red again. The 5800PIR-RES is a popular, versatile device that will pick up motion with a 35 foot by 40 foot area and is smart enough to ignore objects less than 80 pounds such as pets. In order to test the motion detector after programming it, you can put the system into ‘Test Mode.’ However it is important to understand how the motion detector works in order to test the motion while not in test mode. There are two features that affect the testing of any** Honeywell wireless motion detector: Transmission Lockout and Auto-stay Arming.

Like all Honeywell RF sensors, this motion detector is optimized for longer than average battery life lasting up to 10 years depending on usage. In order to attain this lengthy battery life, Honeywell uses a “Transmission Lockout” technology which is designed to minimize the number of faults of reported back to the panel when the system is disarmed. For example, you are walking around your home when the alarm system is disarmed and the motion detector is picking you up. After the first fault is reported to the alarm system it restores the fault after 7 seconds. Then that motion will “go to sleep” (deactivate) and no longer report faults back to the panel for 3 full minutes. There is nothing that will wake up the motion. If you arm the system while the motion is still sleeping it will stay asleep. However as soon as the motion wakes up in armed mode it will stay awake for the armed cycle.

The battery life lasts much longer by diminishing the number of faults reported while the system is disarmed. If you are testing be sure not to trip the motion and put it to sleep just before arming. If you do, simply wait the 3 minutes and then trip it. The Transmission Lockout feature can not be disabled.

All in all, it is best to first use the alarm system’s test mode to verify the motion is properly reporting faults. Then test the motion by arming away and keeping in mind the transmission lockout (battery saving timeout period) and auto-stay mode. You may find that the motion detector that did not seem to work reliably actually works very well and should last many years on a single battery!
